Moscow (Web Desk): Russia has recently presented a bold and significant project aimed at establishing a nuclear power plant on the Moon. The objective is to accelerate Russia's lunar space program and strengthen its presence in the space race. According to Russia's state space agency, Roscosmos, the project is set to be completed by 2036 and will be overseen by the Lavochkin Association.
This nuclear power plant will supply energy for Russia’s lunar projects, including rovers on the Moon and a joint Russian-Chinese lunar research station. Roscosmos has described this initiative as a new chapter in scientific research, noting that it will be a crucial step toward the establishment of a permanent, operational scientific lunar station.
Dmitry Rogozin, the head of Roscosmos, mentioned in June that in addition to the lunar nuclear power plant, another major plan of the company is the exploration of Venus, Earth's neighboring planet.
This move is part of Russia's efforts to reassert itself in the global space race, where the US, China, and other nations are expanding their space capabilities. Russia's plan aims not only to provide energy on the Moon but also to transition toward a long-term lunar research program.
Although Russia's space program was once a global leader, such as with Yuri Gagarin’s first spaceflight in 1961, it has fallen behind the U.S. and China in recent years. Its most recent setback came in August 2023, when Russia’s Luna 25 mission crashed on the Moon's surface, marking a significant blow to its space ambitions.
