Islamabad (Web Desk/Agencies): Christmas was observed across Pakistan on Thursday as Christian community marked the sacred occasion with prayers, reflection and joyful traditions, standing in solidarity with believers around the globe.
The day unfolded in a festive yet reverent atmosphere, with churches dressed in glowing lights and decorated Christmas trees. Congregations gathered to offer special prayers seeking peace, prosperity and stability for the nation.
Security measures were heightened around places of worship to ensure smooth and safe celebrations.
In Karachi, members of the Christian community attended special services at churches throughout the city. St Patrick’s Church in Saddar became a focal point of celebration, where worshippers participated enthusiastically in prayers and hymns amid an environment of devotion and cheer.
Lahore also came alive as Christmas celebrations began at midnight. Churches were illuminated with colourful lights, drawing large crowds. At the Cathedral Church near Regal Chowk, a sizeable congregation attended the ceremony, during which prayers were offered for the country’s development and the collective progress of the nation.
Another prominent gathering took place at St Luke Cathedral Church in Shahdara. The ceremony was led by Father Irfan Yousaf and featured the cutting of a 100-pound cake. Traditional Christmas carols filled the air, while a fireworks display added to the festive spirit of the event.
Many participants said Christmas represents a message of love, harmony, peace and mutual respect, values they believe are essential for strengthening unity within society.
On the occasion, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif conveyed heartfelt greetings and good wishes to Christian citizens in Pakistan and to Christian communities worldwide.
In separate messages, the president and the premier described Christmas as a symbol of hope, compassion and peace, reminding people of the bonds that connect humanity.
They also acknowledged the significant role played by Christian citizens in Pakistan’s progress, praising their contributions in fields such as politics, national defence, education, literature, arts, music, healthcare, social welfare and public service.
Reaffirming the state’s stance, the president and the prime minister reiterated the government’s resolve to promote interfaith harmony, protect fundamental rights and freedoms, support economic well-being and ensure equal opportunities for all citizens without discrimination on the basis of religion, race or ethnicity.
