In many rural communities, women are the primary collectors and users of water, granting them an intimate understanding of local water sources and needs. Their roles in agriculture and household management position them uniquely to contribute to sustainable groundwater practices.
Barriers limiting women's participation in water governance structure
Despite their crucial involvement, women often face systemic barriers limiting their participation in formal water governance structures. Societal norms and gender biases frequently relegate them to the periphery of decision -making process, overlooking their valuable insights and contributions.
Success story
In arid Tharparkar regions in Sindh, women and girls traditionally spent extensive hours daily fetching water from distant and deep wells. To address this, the Canadian red crescent society, in partnership with Pakistan initiated the installation of solar-powered water pumps in ten remote countries.
