DSP among seven policemen martyred in attack on police van in Kohat

Kohat (Web Desk): At least seven people, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and an Inspector, were martyred and several others were injured when armed assailants opened fire on a police vehicle on Shakardarra Road on Tuesday.

According to police, the attack targeted the DSP of Lachi Asad Mahmood, whose vehicle came under heavy firing near Shakardarra Road.

DSP Asad Mahmood was martyred on the spot along with his two guards.

Authorities confirmed that the total death toll in the incident reached seven, among them Inspector Innaar Gul and a police Muharrar.

District Police Officer (DPO) Kohat said that the attack was sudden and intense, leaving several officers wounded.

The injured personnel were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital, where they received emergency medical treatment.

The DPO further said that the attackers set the police vehicle ablaze after the shooting before fleeing the scene.

A heavy contingent of police rushed to the site shortly after the incident, cordoned off the area, and launched a search operation to track down those responsible.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist assault carried out by Fitna al-Khwarij on a police vehicle in KP’s Kohat District.

The president and the premier paid homage to DSP Asad Mamood and other officers who sacrificed their lives in the attack, extending their deepest sympathies to the families of the martyred personnel.

According to a statement issued by President Secretariat Media Wing, President Zardari praised the fallen officers for their extraordinary dedication and ultimate sacrifice for the country. 

He reiterated that terrorism, supported by foreign elements, was being decisively confronted and eliminated.

“The menace of terrorism will be eradicated from the country,” PM Office Media Wing, in a press release, quoted PM Shehbaz as saying.
