Istanbul (Web Desk): A deadly explosion occurred at an explosives plant in northwestern Turkey on Tuesday, killing 12 people and injuring five others.

The blast took place at around 8:25 a.m. in the Karesi district of Balikesir province.

Officials reported that 12 employees lost their lives, with four initially hospitalized for injuries; later, the number of injured was revised to five, and they were not in serious condition.

There were no remaining staff inside the plant when the explosion occurred, and the resulting fire was quickly extinguished.

The cause of the explosion remains unclear, though local officials suggested "technical reasons" and ruled out sabotage.

The authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the incident. The plant, which produces munitions, explosives, and flares, is located away from residential areas.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his condolences, saying he was "deeply saddened" by the deaths and had instructed an immediate investigation.

Security measures were put in place, and access to the area was restricted.

This is not the first such incident in Turkey. Previous explosions at industrial facilities have resulted in casualties, including a fireworks factory explosion in 2020 and a military explosives factory explosion in 2023.
