Washington (Web Desk/Agencies): The United States (US) has confirmed that Israel and Lebanon will maintain their ceasefire for another three weeks after negotiations took place at the White House.
US Donald Trump shared that discussions between the Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors in Washington were productive.
Posting on his social media platform, he remarked that the meeting went “very well”. He also stated, “The United States is going to work with Lebanon in order to help it protect itself from Hezbollah,” highlighting Washington’s intention to support Lebanon’s security.
He went on to say that he is expecting to meet Benjamin Netanyahu and Joseph Aoun “in the near future.”
According to The Associated Press, the earlier ceasefire arrangement, which lasted 10 days and started last Friday, had been scheduled to end on Monday.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar commented that ties between the two nations are largely stable, saying, “We don't have any serious disagreements with Lebanon. There are a few minor border disputes that can be solved.” He further remarked, “The obstacle to peace and normalization between the countries is one: Hezbollah”.
On the other hand, Hezbollah has dismissed the outcome of these negotiations. Senior official Wafiq Safa told The Associated Press that the group would not abide by any agreements reached.
The conflict has caused heavy losses, with authorities in Lebanon reporting nearly 2,300 fatalities and more than one million people displaced.
