Lahore (Web Desk): The 25th death anniversary of Noor Jehan, fondly known as Malika-e-Tarannum, is being observed today (Tuesday), with fans honouring her remarkable contributions to music and cinema.
Born in 1926 in Kasur, Punjab, as Allah Wasai, Noor Jehan grew up in a family steeped in musical tradition.
Her prodigious talent emerged early, and she began performing as a child artist in Kolkata at the age of nine. Over time, she became celebrated as the “Queen of Melody,” earning a place among South Asia’s most influential singers.
Across a career spanning more than three decades, Noor Jehan recorded an extraordinary 10,000 songs in Urdu, Punjabi, and Sindhi, enchanting generations with her voice.
Her music took on a deeply patriotic tone during the 1965 war with India, when her stirring songs lifted the morale of the Pakistan Army and inspired the nation, becoming enduring symbols of courage and pride.
Noor Jehan’s artistic achievements were recognized with numerous honors, including the President’s Award, the Special Nigar Award, Pride of Performance, Sitara-e-Imtiaz, and Lifetime Achievement Awards from PTV and other institutions, culminating in the Millennium Award.
She passed away on December 23, 2000 and was buried in Karachi.
