Lahore (Web Desk): Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader Parvez Elahi on Friday filed a petition in the Lahore High Court (LHC) against Governor Balighur Rehman’s de-notification from chief minister’s office.
In the petition, Parvez Elahi appealed to the court to declare the governor’s notification illegal.
It informs the court that the Punjab Assembly Speaker Sibtain Khan was asked to summon a session for vote of confidence. It added that the speaker did not summon the session as one was already underway.
“No action can be taken against any chief minister over speaker’s actions,” maintains the petition.
Punjabunjab Governor Balighur Rehman de-notified Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi in the wee hours of Friday upon his failure to obtain vote of confidence from Provincial Assembly at the appointed day and time.
Earlier, the governor had asked the chief minister to obtain vote of confidence on Wednesday at 4pm.
The order issued by the governor late last night said since the chief minister has not obtained vote of confidence, despite lapse of another twenty-four hours, therefore he does not command confidence of the House and ceases to hold the office with immediate effect.
As per the order, the provincial cabinet also stands dissolved.
However, Chaudhry Parvez Elahi has been asked to continue to hold the office until his successor assumes the office of the chief minister.
Following the move, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), a strong ally of Elahi, rejected the governor's notification and announced to challenge the move.
PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said that the notification holds “no legal status” and Parves Elahi also announced approaching the court first thing on Friday.
