Islamabad (Web Desk): Renowned fashion designer Maria B has come under official scrutiny after making controversial comments about the transgender community on social media. The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has formally initiated an inquiry into the matter.
According to sources, Maria B has been served a notice by the NCCIA, directing her to appear before the agency on August 26. The investigation stems from a complaint lodged by transgender activist Naeem Butt, also known as Seema Butt, alleging that Maria B spread derogatory and harmful content targeting the transgender community through her online platforms.
In response, Maria B has hired prominent legal expert Barrister Mian Ali Ashfaq to represent her. The barrister confirmed that legal consultations are ongoing, and the matter is being reviewed thoroughly.
Maria B has previously voiced her opposition to transgender identity and LGBTQ+ visibility in Pakistan. Recently, she shared a video on social media that allegedly showed transgender individuals participating in a dance party in Lahore. She criticized the event as morally inappropriate and harmful to social values.
The video sparked widespread attention and prompted Punjab Police to launch a raid, arresting several transgender persons on allegations of promoting obscenity at a private gathering. However, a local court later dismissed the case, citing insufficient evidence.
The court order stated that no substantial proof was presented to link the accused to any illegal activity. Consequently, the court rejected the police’s request for a 10-day remand and ordered the release of all detained individuals.
This incident has once again ignited nationwide debate on freedom of expression, minority rights, and the treatment of transgender individuals in Pakistan.
