Istanbul (Web Desk): A strong earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck Türkiye on Wednesday, sending tremors through Istanbul and triggering widespread evacuations.
The quake’s epicenter was located beneath the Marmara Sea, near the Silivri district, according to Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported the quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Although there were no immediate reports of significant destruction, the sudden shaking caused alarm across the city.
Many residents fled their homes and buildings, seeking safety outdoors and scrambling to contact loved ones.
The tremors led to at least one injury—local media outlet TGRT reported that a person was hurt after leaping from a balcony in panic.
The incident unfolded during a national holiday, adding to the crowds in public areas and heightening the disruption.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced that emergency response teams had been deployed to evaluate the situation and provide assistance to those affected.
Authorities urged people to stay clear of any structures showing visible signs of damage until thorough inspections are completed.
