While these signs can also result from privacy settings such as disabled last-seen visibility, determining whether a block has occurred has never been straightforward.
However, a new report suggests that users may be able to identify potential blocks through an existing WhatsApp security feature.
According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp's automatic encryption verification system can be used as an indirect way to check whether a contact may have blocked them.
The feature is primarily designed to verify that a conversation is protected by end-to-end encryption. Users can access it by opening a chat, tapping the contact's name at the top of the screen, and selecting the "Encryption" option from the contact information page.
Under normal circumstances, WhatsApp automatically verifies the encryption status and completes the process without any issues.
The report states that if the verification cannot be completed and WhatsApp instead suggests alternative verification methods, it could indicate that the user has been blocked by that contact.
One notable aspect of the process is that the other person is not notified when someone checks the encryption status, allowing users to carry out the verification discreetly.
Despite the speculation, WhatsApp has not officially confirmed that the feature serves as a block-detection tool.
The report cautions that while the method may provide a strong indication that a block has occurred, it should not be considered definitive proof. Instead, it should be viewed as one of several signs that may suggest a contact has blocked a user on the platform.
