Islamabad (Web Desk): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has inaugurated the Indus Robotics and Autonomous Systems Expo 2026 in Islamabad, describing the event as a reflection of Pakistan’s ambition to emerge as a key player in technologies shaping the future.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony, the prime minister said robotics and autonomous technologies are revolutionizing various sectors, particularly agriculture, by enabling farmers to identify crop stress, improve the efficient use of water, fertilizers, and pesticides, and better tackle climate-related challenges.
He highlighted that these technologies can also significantly contribute to disaster management by enhancing access to affected regions and strengthening relief and rescue operations.
Speaking about Pakistan’s advancements in domestic technological capabilities, Shehbaz Sharif said the country has achieved notable progress in developing autonomous systems, especially in the defence and security sectors.
He said the armed forces, under the leadership of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, have successfully integrated advanced technologies developed within Pakistan.
The prime minister noted that several sophisticated simulators are now being produced and assembled locally, while drone technology has reached more than 60 percent indigenization.
He appreciated the efforts of scientists, engineers, technocrats, and professionals for their role in expanding Pakistan’s technological capabilities and promoting innovation.
Referring to the success of Marka-e-Haq, Shehbaz Sharif said the world witnessed Pakistan’s effective deployment of advanced autonomous systems to protect its physical and cyber boundaries.
The prime minister stressed the importance of collaboration among universities, research institutions, startups, industries, and the agriculture sector to develop a robust national innovation ecosystem.
He emphasized that technologies and knowledge developed in Pakistan should remain indigenous, nationally controlled, and continuously improved.
Calling for inclusive technological growth, Shehbaz Sharif said the robotics and autonomous systems revolution should create benefits for farmers, small businesses, women entrepreneurs, young innovators, and marginalized communities across the country.
He also underscored the need for strong regulatory and ethical frameworks to ensure autonomous technologies remain safe, secure, transparent, and are utilized for the betterment of humanity.
During the ceremony, the prime minister announced two major initiatives aimed at promoting innovation and technological advancement in Pakistan.
He said the government would launch the Spark and Elevate Programme to convert research efforts into globally competitive technologies, businesses, and employment opportunities.
He also announced the establishment of the Pakistan Venture Fund, with an initial investment commitment of $20 million, to encourage investment in the country’s technology ecosystem.
