Bangladesh’s participation in the upcoming 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup is now uncertain after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) publicly stated its refusal to travel to India for the tournament.
BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul told reporters that their only condition for participating was to have the World Cup played outside of India, effectively ruling out Bangladesh’s involvement unless their demands were met.
The decision came after a meeting between BCB officials, the national cricket team players, and Asif Nazrul, Adviser to Bangladesh's Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Nazrul later addressed the media, reiterating that Bangladesh's stance on the security situation in India remained unchanged, despite the ICC’s refusal to reconsider their position following a Board meeting on Wednesday.
Nazrul stressed that the security concerns were not based on speculation but a real incident involving a Bangladeshi cricketer during a past tour to India. He pointed out that the cricketer had been unable to receive adequate protection from extremist groups, despite the Indian government and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) being closely linked.
"There is no room for changing our decision," Nazrul stated firmly. "We did not get justice from the ICC. We still hope the ICC will take our concerns seriously and act accordingly." He also emphasized that Bangladesh’s security worries were rooted in a genuine security breach and not an arbitrary concern.
As of now, it seems the dispute over security could leave Bangladesh on the sidelines of cricket’s biggest event, creating uncertainty for the tournament ahead.
