Islamabad (Web Desk): Former prime minister and Pakista Peoples Party (PPP) leader Yousaf Raza Gillani on Monday said it appeared as if the establishment is 'totally neutral' regarding the upcoming Senate's elections.
Speaking to the media, Gilani, who has been nominated as the joint Senate candidate for Islamabad seat by Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), thanked the Opposition parties for expressing confidence in him.
The PPP leader said that he had gotten elected in 2008 as the prime minister of the country through a consensus, adding that he had secured 264 while his opponent received 42.
"I secured the votes on the basis of my personal relations," he said, adding that he would go individually to meet each member of the PDM.
Gilani said his victory in the Senate elections will be a victory for the forces of democracy.
He congratulated the PDM for its candidates' victory in the by-elections.
Speaking on the occasion, Jamiat Ulma-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief and president of PDM Maulan Fazlur Rehman said that Yousaf Raza Gilani's nomination has made matters "serious" for the government.
He said that the government had nominated Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Shaikh from Islamabad, who has held the country's economy "in his hands during every government's tenure".
Fazl observed that "inflation is on the rise and the commoners' power of purchase for even essential commodities has significantly declined".
The PDM chief said that the masses want people who can pull the country out of crises in vital positions.
