Indonesia earthquake of magnitude 5.6 kills at least 56, injures hundreds

Jakarta (Web Desk): At least 56 people were killed and over 700 were injured in a strong earthquake of 5.6-magnitude in the Java Island of Indonesia on Monday.

The epicenter of the quake was near the West Java town of Cianjur, where several buildings have been damaged.

Disturbing graphics on social media show several buildings with their roofs collapsed, while local authorities warned the masses to watch out for aftershocks.

Talking to media, a local official confirmed that west Java town was the worst-hit area by the quake.

He warned that the death toll could rise as villagers outside of the town may still be trapped.

Reports in international media quoting sources also said that a number of causalities could rise even further, while landslides have affected evacuation efforts in the quake-hit nation.

PM Shehbaz, FM Bilawal condole loss of precious lives in Indonesia earthquake

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Monday expressed his condolences with Indonesian President Joko Widodo over the loss of lives caused by an earthquake in the country’s Java region.

In a tweet the premier said he was saddened by the tragic loss of precious lives in an earthquake that struck Java region of Indonesia

“We, in Pakistan, offer our heartfelt condolences and most sincere sympathies to H.E. President Joko Widodo, the bereaved families and the brotherly people of Indonesia,” PM Shehbaz said.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has also expressed his grief and condolences over the loss of lives caused by the earthquake in Indonesia.

In his post on Twitter, the foreign minister wrote, "Tragic news of the earthquake and resultant loss of precious lives in Indonesia. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers for our Indonesian brothers and sisters, especially families of the victims."
