Washington (Web Desk): On his first day back in office, President Donald Trump wasted no time asserting control over the administration by issuing of an abundance of executive orders.

His actions spanned a range of critical areas, from criminal justice to climate change, signaling a dramatic shift in US policy. Below are some of the key directives he signed:

Mass pardons for Capitol rioters
Trump issued pardons to around 1,500 individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol insurrection. This broad move not only cleared the records of those who stormed the Capitol but also cut short sentences for several high-profile members of extremist groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, including those convicted of seditious conspiracy. Additionally, Trump ordered the US Attorney General to drop ongoing cases related to the riot.

Tougher stance on immigration
Trump declared a national emergency regarding illegal immigration at the US-Mexico border, targeting criminal cartels and reaffirming his stance against birthright citizenship for children born to undocumented immigrants. He also suspended the US refugee resettlement programme for at least four months, citing concerns over national security. A review of security protocols for travelers from certain countries will determine whether additional travel bans are necessary.

Reversing Biden’s policies
Trump took immediate steps to undo many of President Joe Biden’s executive actions, revoking 78 directives issued by the previous administration. These actions included everything from pandemic relief efforts to environmental regulations. In addition, Trump directed all government agencies to preserve records relating to alleged political persecution during Biden’s tenure.

Rolling back diversity and inclusion initiatives
As part of his push to reshape government priorities, Trump rescinded a series of Biden’s executive orders promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). This included measures designed to advance LGBTQ+ rights and racial equality. These moves align with Trump’s broader agenda to cut back on protections for marginalized groups.

TikTok ban postponed
In a surprise move, Trump delayed the planned ban on TikTok by 75 days, giving his administration time to reevaluate the situation. The order prohibits the Attorney General from enforcing the ban during this period, allowing for a review of the app’s national security concerns.

Regulatory freeze and hiring restrictions
Trump signed an order halting the implementation of new federal regulations, which would put an end to the Biden administration’s regulatory expansion. Along with this, he imposed a temporary hiring freeze across federal agencies and mandated that all federal employees return to full-time, in-person work. The latter move is seen as a direct challenge to the growing trend of remote work, particularly following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Economic relief and inflation control
In an effort to ease the financial burden on Americans, Trump directed government agencies to take immediate action to combat inflation. His orders emphasized reducing regulatory costs and expanding housing availability. Trump placed blame on the Biden administration for exacerbating the inflation crisis and promised swift relief for American workers.

Climate policy reversal
Trump announced the United States’ formal exit from the Paris climate accord, a decision that had been widely anticipated following his re-election. He also rescinded a 2023 directive from Biden that prohibited oil drilling in 16 million acres of the Arctic, signaling a strong push for expanded energy exploration. Trump’s orders also dismantled electric vehicle mandates, signaling his preference for fossil fuel-driven growth over green energy initiatives.

Withdrawing from the WHO
In a direct challenge to global health bodies, Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the US from the World Health Organization (WHO). Citing the WHO’s mishandling of the Covid-19 pandemic and other global health crises, Trump set the stage for a more isolationist approach to international health cooperation.

Government efficiency and downsizing
Trump announced the creation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an advisory body aimed at streamlining the federal government. The group, led by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, has ambitious plans to slash federal agencies and reduce the size of the civil service by up to 75%. The initiative has already drawn criticism and legal challenges.

Investigating political misconduct
In a direct challenge to the Biden administration, Trump signed an order directing the Attorney General to investigate government agencies accused of political misconduct during the previous four years. The investigation will target agencies like the DOJ and SEC, with a focus on potential abuses of power against political opponents.

Restoring free speech
Trump moved to safeguard free speech by signing an executive order aimed at curbing federal censorship. The order targets what Trump described as the suppression of free expression under the guise of combating misinformation. This action follows complaints from Trump and his allies that the Biden administration stifled free speech, particularly on social media platforms.

Energy policy overhaul
Trump declared a national energy emergency, aimed at boosting US oil and gas production. His orders reversed many of Biden’s climate-related policies, including withdrawing from international climate agreements and expanding drilling rights in Alaska. These moves align with Trump’s broader goal to prioritize US energy independence and reduce reliance on foreign oil.

With these executive actions, President Trump has clearly signaled his intention to roll back key policies from the Biden administration. From immigration to climate change, these moves underscore a dramatic pivot in the US’s domestic and international priorities.
