Islamabad (Web Desk): United Business Group (UBG) Patron-in-Chief S.M. Tanveer has said that to ensure Pakistan’s economic stability and broaden the tax base, the country must expand its business and industrial activities at least tenfold.
Speaking to the media in the federal capital, he emphasized that the rising cost of electricity calls for a swift shift toward alternative energy, particularly solar power, to reduce production expenses.
The UBG chief added that Pakistan is regaining respect at the international level, presenting a crucial opportunity to strengthen its economy through sustainable reforms.
He stressed that greater business activity would generate employment and increase tax revenues, helping the country achieve fiscal resilience. “We have no political affiliation — our only objective is to contribute to the improvement of Pakistan’s economy,” he said.
Highlighting social sector spending, Tanveer noted that Pakistan currently allocates around Rs3.2 trillion to health and education, yet these sectors still require substantial improvement.
Citing Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat as an example, he said the minister’s decision to enroll his child in a public school reflects confidence in the state’s education system.
The business leader lamented that despite Pakistan’s abundance of oil, minerals, and other natural resources, the country remains burdened by debt — a clear indication, he said, of systemic inefficiencies.
To address these structural flaws, Tanveer proposed administrative reforms, including the creation of smaller provinces for better governance.
“India, with more than 30 states, has decentralized its system effectively, while Pakistan, despite a population of 250 million, still operates with only four provinces. This imbalance hinders efficient administration,” he explained.
He further asserted that meaningful progress would only be possible once power is devolved to the grassroots level.
Commending the sacrifices of the Pakistan Army, Tanveer said the armed forces continue to defend the country on every front, but it is equally important for citizens to fulfill their responsibilities in nation-building.
