President, PM express grief over death of US Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee

Islamabad (Web Desk/Agencies): President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday expressed grief over the death of the United States (US) Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, founder and co-chairperson of the Congressional Pakistan Caucus.

In a statement, the president offered his heartfelt condolences to the family members and friends of the late Congresswoman.

President Zardari said that Congresswoman Sheila Jackson was a remarkable leader who always advocated for human rights, with a particular focus on women and children.

He highlighted that her contributions towards strengthening the relations between Pakistan and the USA would always be remembered.

The president stated that her efforts during the devastating floods of 2022 in Pakistan would never be forgotten.

 “Her advocacy and support during that difficult time provided hope and relief to the families affected by the floods”, President Zardari added.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday expressed deep grief and sorrow over death of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.

“As Co-chair of the Pakistan Caucus in the US House of Representatives, she was a champion for stronger ties between Pakistan and the United States,” the premier wrote on his X timeline.

“Her contributions will be remembered and missed for years to come. May her soul rest in peace. My heartfelt condolences to her family and her supporters,” he added.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister (FM) Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Saturday expressed sorrow over the death of US Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.

In a post on his official X handle, the deputy premier wrote, “Deeply saddened by the loss of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a distinguished lawmaker and a steadfast friend of Pakistan.

Dar highlighted Sheila Jackson’s role as Chairperson of the Congressional Pakistan Caucus, emphasizing her unwavering dedication to strengthening Pakistan-US relations, which he noted will be remembered always.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the FM added.

In a statement issued on X, Pakistan Consulate General Houston said that the country lost a remarkable friend.

"It is with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of Congresswoman [Sheila Jackson Lee]. Pakistani-American community in Houston lost a remarkable friend. As a fierce fighter, she worked tirelessly for the people. We share the grief of the family. RIP," it said.

US Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, founder and co-chairperson of the Congressional Pakistan Caucus, passed away after a battle with cancer, her family announced on Friday night.

Ms. Jackson Lee, 74, said in June that she had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was undergoing treatment.

The longtime congresswoman served in the House since 1995 and leaves a legacy of pushing for legislation related to civil rights.
