Severe snowstorm in Michigan causes over 100 vehicle pile-up

Michigan (Web Desk): In the United States (US), a severe snowstorm wreaked havoc in the state of Michigan, causing a massive chain-reaction crash on a major highway that involved over 100 vehicles, including at least 30 large trucks.

The incident, which occurred along Interstate 196, led to a complete shutdown of the motorway. Several vehicles were overturned, while others skidded off the road, trapping motorists in the chaos.


According to Michigan State Police, the accident took place due to poor visibility and icy road conditions caused by the heavy snowfall. Witnesses described a "domino effect" as the snowstorm worsened, causing one vehicle after another to lose control. Many of the affected vehicles were commercial trucks, which had difficulty stopping or maneuvering due to the slick roads.

Although numerous injuries were reported, Michigan State Police confirmed that, fortunately, no fatalities have been recorded so far. Several people sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate, and emergency services were on the scene providing medical attention.


In the aftermath of the crash, rescue operations were launched swiftly. Stranded passengers were carefully evacuated and transported by buses to a nearby high school, where temporary shelter was set up. The high school provided warmth, food, and a safe place for the travelers to wait while road clearing operations were underway. Emergency responders also distributed blankets, hot drinks, and other necessary supplies.


Drone footage captured the extent of the damage, showing the highway completely covered in snow. The heavy snow accumulation, combined with winds gusting up to 40 miles per hour, made it incredibly difficult to clear the roads. Officials estimated that it could take several hours, if not longer, to remove the wrecked vehicles and reopen the highway for normal traffic.

The road closure had a significant impact on the flow of traffic, with many drivers left stranded on nearby roads while they awaited further instructions. Authorities urged people to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary, as road conditions remained hazardous and unpredictable.


The snowstorm in Michigan was part of a broader weather system affecting much of the northern and eastern United States. The National Weather Service issued a series of winter weather warnings and advisories across the region, including for areas in northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.
