Rawalpindi (Web Desk): Today marks the 54th anniversary of the martyrdom of Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas, as the nation remembers and honours the courage and sacrifice of the youngest recipient of the Nishan-e-Haider — Pakistan’s highest military award — and the first officer from the Pakistan Air Force to be granted this distinction.
Rashid Minhas was born on February 17, 1951, in Karachi, where he spent his early years and completed his initial schooling. Drawn by a passion for flying, he joined the Pakistan Air Force Academy in Risalpur as a Flying Cadet at the young age of 17.
In 1971, after successfully completing his basic training, he qualified as a general duty pilot and was stationed at PAF Base Masroor in Karachi’s Mauripur area for advanced instruction as a fighter pilot.
On August 20, 1971, while still undergoing training, Rashid was preparing for a routine flight in a T-33 jet trainer.
As he taxied the aircraft on the runway, his instructor, Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman — a Bengali officer — entered the rear cockpit without authorization and attempted to divert the jet toward India in an act of defection.
During the flight, Rahman rendered Rashid unconscious and seized control of the plane. As the aircraft neared the Indian border, with only 40 miles of Pakistani airspace left, Rashid regained consciousness.
Realizing that he could not fully regain command of the aircraft, and determined not to let the jet be taken across the border, he made the fateful decision to crash it.
The aircraft went down 32 miles short of the Indian border, killing both men but successfully preventing the defection.
Rashid Minhas’s final act of bravery and self-sacrifice earned him the Nishan-e-Haider posthumously. His legacy lives on as a powerful symbol of patriotism and honour, remembered every year with deep respect and national pride.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas Shaheed (Nishan-i-Haider) on his 54th martyrdom anniversary, lauding his courage, dedication, and sacrifice to safeguard the motherland.
In a statement the premier, in a statement, said that the sacrifice of Rashid Minhas manifested the great values of courage and dedication to duty.
“On this day in 1971, Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas demonstrated extraordinary resolve and embraced martyrdom to protect Pakistan’s sovereignty. His unparalleled passion, loyalty, and patriotism remain a source of inspiration for the armed forces and the nation,” he commented.
The prime minister said that the bravery of Rashid Minhas continued to remind the nation of the sacrifices and resolve needed to protect the nation’s freedom.
“We pay heartfelt tribute to the enduring legacy of Pakistan’s armed forces. Rashid Minhas will always be remembered as a national symbol of loyalty, courage, and pride,” Prime Minister Shehbaz remarked.
