Karachi (Web Desk): Due to a weather system, heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds continued for the second consecutive day in the city of Karachi, leaving at least 17 dead and causing severe difficulties for residents.
Asper the reports, waterlogging in various parts of the city, disruption in traffic flow, and power outages have created significant problems for citizens.
Several areas including Shah Faisal Colony, Saddar, Liaquatabad, Jamshed Road, Clifton, Defence, Shahrah-e-Faisal, Nursery, Airport, Frere Hall, Kharadar, Urdu Bazaar, Tariq Road, and others are facing flooded streets resembling canals due to heavy rainfall.
Seven underpasses across the city have been closed to traffic due to several feet of water accumulation. At Nursery on Shahrah-e-Faisal, heaps of garbage have caused environmental pollution and foul odors, adding to the residents’ woes.
According to Anjum Nazir Zaigham, Deputy Director of the Meteorological Department, the rainfall is expected to continue until 7 PM today, with rain forecasted across Sindh until August 23. He also mentioned that there are still thunderclouds over Karachi’s northeastern areas.
During yesterday’s stormy rain, people lost their lives in various accidents. Today has been declared a public holiday in the city; courts and educational institutions remain closed, and power has not yet been restored in many areas.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, during a news conference, stated that climate change is a global issue and cannot be attributed to the failure of any single city or department. He noted that 235 millimeters of rain was recorded in Manghopir. However, the mayor had to leave the conference when the rain resumed.
Meanwhile, citizens have raised questions about the performance of relevant authorities and demanded effective drainage management to prevent such situations in the future.
