Beijing/Riyadh (Web Desk): Chinese President Xi Jinping has stressed the importance of keeping maritime traffic moving freely through the Strait of Hormuz, during a telephone conversation on Monday with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The discussion comes as Beijing increases its diplomatic engagement in efforts to help bring an end to the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran.
China has expressed rising concern over instability near this strategically crucial shipping route, especially after the US-Iran ceasefire was put under renewed pressure.
This followed Washington’s seizure of an Iranian cargo vessel, while Tehran also indicated it would not participate in upcoming peace talks for the moment.
As the biggest purchaser of Iranian oil, China has significant stakes in the situation. Since the outbreak of the conflict between the US and Israel in February, Iran has reportedly limited passage through the Strait of Hormuz mainly to its own vessels, while the United States has introduced a blockade on Iranian shipping since last week.
According to the state-run Xinhua News Agency, Xi reiterated China’s position calling for an immediate and full ceasefire, adding that disputes in the Middle East should be settled through diplomatic and political channels rather than force.
He stated, "The Strait of Hormuz should remain open to normal passage, as this serves the common interests of regional countries and the international community," during his conversation with the Saudi crown prince.
Fears over the continuation of the US-Iran ceasefire have increased after the recent interception of the Iranian ship by US forces.
US President Donald Trump had earlier acknowledged China’s role in facilitating Iran’s involvement in previous discussions with Washington that were held in Pakistan.
Meanwhile, China’s foreign ministry on Monday voiced concern over what it termed the “forced interception” of the Iranian vessel by the United States, urging all parties to fully respect the ceasefire agreement and avoid further escalation.
Xi’s latest call with the Saudi crown prince came shortly after his meeting in Beijing last week with the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, during which he emphasised the importance of following international law in handling regional issues.
He also conveyed to the Saudi crown prince that China supports Middle Eastern countries in "taking their future and destiny into their own hands, and promoting long-term regional stability and peace".
