Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh takes charge as finance adviser

Islamabad (Staff Report): Newly-appointed adviser to the prime minister on finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh took charge of his office on Saturday.

The finance adviser will also have the charge of Revenue and Economic Affairs Division. Sheikh's designation will be at par with that of a federal minister.

Born in 1955, Dr Sheikh holds a PhD in economics from Boston University. Having worked at Harvard Institute of Development and assumed key offices at the World Bank. With over 30 years of experience, he also served as Pakistan's finance minister from 2010 to 2013.

After leaving the government, Hafeez Sheikh was general partner of an international investment company, headquartered in New York, which set up a $1.38 Billion fund for investments in Asia.

The portfolio was handed over to Hafeez Shaikh after former finance minister Asad Umar stepped down from his post on Thursday.

On Friday, President Arif Alvi, on the advice of Prime Minister Imran Khan, accepted the resignation tendered by Asad Umer from the office of Federal Minister for Finance, Revenue and Economic Affairs.

Meanwhile, a notification has been issued regarding appointment of Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh as Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance, Revenue and Economic Affairs, with the status of Federal Minister.

Earlier on Friday, new notification of federal ministers, ministers of state and advisers, and special assistants to the prime minister was issued which was listing Asad Umar as the finance minister.
