Islamabad (Web Desk/Agencies): The Supreme Court's (SC) Constitutional Bench dismissed a petition challenging the extension of Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir's tenure.

Headed by Justice Amin ud Din Khan, the bench included Justices Jamal Mandokhail, Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Ayesha Malik, Hasan Azher Rizvi, Musarrat Hilali, and Naeem Akhtar Afghan.

The petition, filed by Mahmood Akhtar Naqvi, was rejected due to non-pursuance, whereas the court also upheld objections from the SC registrar's office regarding its inadmissibility.

This ruling comes after the government amended the Pakistan (Army/Air Force/Navy) Act of 2024 earlier this month.

The amendments increased the fixed tenure of military chiefs, including the COAS, to five years and introduced changes to the retirement age and service limits.

Under the new law, the age and service criteria for senior military officers no longer apply to the heads of the armed forces during their term, reappointment, or extension.

Meanwhile, the top court’s constitutional bench has scheduled hearings for over 2,000 cases during this week.
