Rawalpindi (Web Desk): Islamabad United defeated Karachi Kings by 79 runs in the 30th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 10 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Monday.
The win secured United a spot in the Qualifier, where they will now face table-toppers Quetta Gladiators on Wednesday. The result also pushed the Kings down to third place, setting up a high-stakes Eliminator clash against their arch-rivals Lahore Qalandars on Thursday.
Batting first after losing the toss, United’s new opening pair of Alex Hales and Sahibzada Farhan laid the foundation for a mammoth total with a breathtaking 153-run partnership. The stand equaled the team’s highest-ever partnership in PSL history. Farhan played fluently for his 73 off just 41 balls, hitting a dozen boundaries, including three sixes, before being dismissed while attempting a scoop off Mir Hamza in the 12th over.
United briefly stumbled after Farhan’s dismissal, losing Rassie van der Dussen and Salman Ali Agha in quick succession. But Hales continued the onslaught with a blistering 88 off 35 balls, smashing six fours and eight towering sixes before being removed by Khushdil Shah. Skipper Shadab Khan then took charge with a fiery 42-run cameo that helped propel the hosts to a daunting total of 251 for 5. He was supported by Haider Ali, who chipped in with an unbeaten 19 from nine balls. The Kings’ bowlers had a tough outing, with Aamir Jamal, Khushdil Shah, and Mir Hamza each managing a single wicket.
In response, Karachi Kings needed 204 runs to maintain their second-place standing but were bowled out for 172 in 18.5 overs. The chase started promisingly with an opening stand of 56 between captain David Warner and Tim Seifert. Seifert struck 26 off 17 before being bowled by Salman Irshad in the sixth over. Warner tried to hold the innings together with a 28-ball 43 featuring four boundaries and two sixes, but his departure to Imad Wasim in the 11th over marked the beginning of a dramatic collapse.
The Kings crumbled to 114 for 8 in just over three overs following Warner’s exit, with the middle and lower order offering little resistance. James Vince and Saad Baig fell cheaply, while Shadab Khan wreaked havoc with the ball, claiming 4 wickets for 45 runs. Salman Irshad also starred with three scalps, while Imad Wasim and Salman Ali Agha took one wicket apiece.
Abbas Afridi provided a late spark with a rapid 34 off just 13 balls, blasting two fours and three sixes, but his efforts only delayed the inevitable. Irshad removed him in the 17th over before sealing the game by dismissing Aamir Jamal in his next, capping off a comprehensive victory for United.
The result not only handed Islamabad United a confidence-boosting win ahead of the playoffs but also emphasized their championship credentials as they gear up for a crucial showdown against Quetta Gladiators in the first playoff match.
