Quetta (Web Desk): A moderate earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale struck Khuzdar district and surrounding areas in Balochistan on Thursday, causing panic among residents. Authorities confirmed that no casualties or significant damage have been reported so far.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 11 kilometres, with its epicentre approximately 45 kilometres north of Khuzdar city.
Initial reports indicate that tremors were strongly felt across Khuzdar, nearby villages, and adjacent areas. Frightened residents evacuated homes, shops, and offices, gathering in open spaces as a precautionary measure.
District administration and local police officials stated that only minor vibrations were observed in buildings and that emergency surveys have been initiated to assess any potential damage.
Seismologists noted that while the quake was moderate, its shallow depth made the tremors feel more intense. This incident is part of a recent wave of seismic activity in Balochistan, where earthquakes of 5.5 to 5.6 magnitude were recorded in February.
The PMD and other seismic authorities have advised citizens to review the structural safety of their homes, keep emergency supplies ready, and move to safe locations if needed.
Officials assured the public that the situation is under close observation and that updates will be provided as necessary.
Last month, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region, with tremors felt across Islamabad, Swat, Peshawar, Chitral, and other cities in Pakistan. The PMD reported the epicentre at 36.99°N latitude and 71.41°E longitude in the Hindu Kush region.
