Islamabad (Web Desk): The World Humanitarian Day is being observed today (Tuesday) across the globe including Pakistan.
This year the theme of the day is “Global Solidarity and the Power of Local Communities”.
Since its inception by the United Nations in 2009, the day has stood as a solemn reminder of the tragic attack on the UN headquarters in Iraq, where 22 lives were lost, among them the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights.
In a message reflecting on the significance of the day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s deep-rooted dedication to humanitarian values and global unity in standing with those who commit their lives to aiding others.
“World Humanitarian Day provides us with an opportunity to renew our pledge to serve and protect humanity,” he said, acknowledging the immense courage and commitment of relief workers and volunteers who go to great lengths to support people in distress.
The prime minister emphasized how this year’s theme draws attention to the indispensable contributions made by volunteers and grassroots responders who play a frontline role in reaching communities during disasters and emergencies.
“Global Solidarity and the Power of Local Communities,” he noted, shines a light on how localized efforts are vital in crisis response and humanitarian relief.
Reflecting on Pakistan’s social ethos, PM Shehbaz highlighted the nation's longstanding traditions of generosity, mutual support, and community-driven service.
“Selfless service, helping others, and participating in welfare work are values we hold in the highest regard. As a nation, we are determined to pass on this spirit of humanity to future generations,” he stated.
He also emphasized the respect and care shown to women, children, and the elderly during emergencies, describing this as a defining trait of Pakistani society.
Moreover, he praised the resilience of Pakistani citizens who, in the face of climate-related disasters, have shown solidarity by joining hands with both federal and provincial bodies to deliver assistance where needed.
The prime minister took pride in Pakistan’s position among the leading nations in terms of charitable donations, noting the spirit of giving that runs deep within the society.
“This spirit of sacrifice ensures that no one goes hungry, despite poverty and hardships. Our people extend help not only during natural disasters but also in times of hunger, unemployment, and conflict,” he said.
Reaffirming the state’s role in this shared mission, PM Shehbaz assured that the Government of Pakistan remains firmly dedicated to defending its citizens’ rights, enhancing their standard of living, and creating a secure environment for those engaged in humanitarian work.
“The Government of Pakistan is fully committed to protecting the rights of its citizens, improving their quality of life, and supporting the safety and encouragement of volunteer workers,” he added.
He concluded by urging people across the nation to take this day as a chance to recommit themselves to positive change—not just within their own neighborhoods, but also as part of the global endeavor to uphold human dignity.
“The nation should mark World Humanitarian Day with a renewed pledge to contribute constructively not only in their local communities and across Pakistan but also, wherever possible, in the broader global effort to safeguard humanity and uphold human dignity,” PM Shehbaz asserted.
