Rome (Web Desk): Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the second phase of indirect dialogue with the United States (US), held in Rome on Saturday, as both “positive and productive”.
Speaking to Iranian press following the meeting, Araghchi announced that the next round of talks is slated to take place in Oman.
According to Araghchi, the four-hour discussion—facilitated by Omani intermediaries—was marked by a cooperative spirit.
While refraining from disclosing specific outcomes, he noted that Tehran and Washington had achieved a clearer mutual understanding on several key principles and objectives.
Before the upcoming high-level meeting, Araghchi said that technical teams from both sides would convene in Oman beginning Wednesday to work through more detailed issues.
He cautioned observers to temper their expectations, urging against both excessive hope and unwarranted pessimism as the negotiations progress.
Echoing Araghchi’s sentiment, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Bagaei shared a similar assessment on X, describing the talks as “useful indirect discussions” conducted in a “constructive atmosphere.”
Bagaei confirmed that technical negotiations would resume in the coming days, followed by another round of high-level exchanges on Saturday.
These indirect nuclear discussions between Tehran and Washington—centered on the future of Iran’s nuclear program—were launched the previous Saturday in Muscat under the mediation of Oman. Iranian officials characterized the initial meeting as respectful and constructive.
After some uncertainty surrounding the venue for the second round, delegations led by Araghchi and US special envoy Steve Witkoff gathered in Rome to continue the dialogue.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump maintained pressure on Tehran, threatening military action if a new agreement isn’t reached to replace the 2015 nuclear deal brokered during the Obama era.
