New Delhi (Web Desk): The United States has revoked visas of several Indian business executives and corporate leaders accused of involvement in the smuggling of fentanyl precursors.
The US Embassy in New Delhi confirmed the visa cancellations on Thursday, stating that the affected individuals are suspected of trafficking key chemicals used in the production of fentanyl—a synthetic opioid largely responsible for the surge in overdose deaths across America.
While the embassy did not disclose the names of those whose visas were canceled, a spokesperson confirmed they were Indian nationals.
The statement also highlighted ongoing close cooperation between Indian and US officials to combat drug smuggling challenges.
Fentanyl precursors refer to the essential chemical compounds required to manufacture fentanyl, which has been a significant contributor to the opioid crisis in the US.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comments regarding the US visa actions.
Previously, former US President Donald Trump had imposed hefty tariffs on imports from countries including India, China, Mexico, and Canada, citing concerns that these nations facilitated the flow of fentanyl into the United States.
In a recent statement to the US Congress, Trump categorized India among 23 major drug transit or production countries. However, he clarified that being on the list does not necessarily reflect the government’s anti-drug efforts.
