New York (Web Desk): The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) approved a resolution crafted by the United States (US) that backs President Donald Trump’s plan to end the conflict in Gaza.
The measure also authorizes the deployment of an international force aimed at stabilizing the Palestinian territory.
Earlier last month, Israel and Hamas reached agreement on the first stage of Trump’s 20-point plan, which includes a ceasefire and a deal for the release of hostages. The UN resolution is considered crucial for legitimizing a transitional governing body and giving assurance to nations considering sending troops to Gaza.
The resolution allows member states to participate in a Trump-led Board of Peace, envisioned as a temporary authority to supervise reconstruction and economic recovery in Gaza. It also sanctions an international stabilization force responsible for supporting demilitarization, including the decommissioning of weapons and dismantling of military infrastructure.
Hamas, however, has made it clear that it will not give up its arms, calling its struggle against Israel “legitimate resistance,” raising the prospect of potential conflict with the international force.
“The resolution imposes an international guardianship mechanism on the Gaza Strip, which our people and their factions reject,” Hamas said in a statement released after the resolution’s adoption.
Speaking to the council before the vote, US Ambassador Mike Waltz described the resolution, which includes Trump’s 20-point plan as an annex, as offering “a pathway toward Palestinian self-determination, where rockets could be replaced by olive branches and a political solution might be possible.”
He added, “It ends Hamas’ dominance and gives Gaza a chance to emerge free from terror, secure and prosperous.”
Russia, which holds veto power on the Security Council, had indicated earlier that it might oppose the resolution but ultimately chose to abstain, clearing the way for its adoption.
