Lahore (Staff Report): The Joint Investigation Team (JIT) probing into the Model Town incident on Monday recorded the statement of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shehbaz Sharif.
According to sources, Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly (NA) was inquired by the JIT for about 45 minutes.
Earlier, the investigation team rejected Shehbaz Sharif’s request to record his statement without appearing before the JIT in person.
The investigation team is headed by Inspector General (IG) Motorways AD Khawaja, and comprises Lt Colonel Mohammad Attique-uz-Zaman from the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Lt Colonel Irfan Mirza from Military Intelligence (MI). Mohammad Ahmed Kamal, deputy director general of Intelligence Bureau (IB), and Qamar Raza, deputy inspector general (DIG) Police Headquarters Gilgit-Baltistan, are also part of the JIT.
Last year, the Supreme Court ordered the Punjab government to form a new JIT to probe Model Town incident.
A larger bench of the SC headed by then Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Mian Saqib Nisar heard the suo moto case regarding formation of a new JIT in the case.
The SC wrapped up the petition and ordered the Punjab government to form a new JIT. The Punjab government assured the top court to implement the orders.
Talking to newsmen outside SC premises, Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) Chief Tahirul Qadri said that the supremacy of law had been upheld.
At least 14 people were killed and over 100 injured during an ‘anti-encroachment’ operation outside the Model Town residence of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) Chief Dr Tahirul Qadri on June 17, 2014.
