The island nation’s power grid has reportedly collapsed entirely, with only about five percent of Havana receiving electricity, primarily to critical facilities such as hospitals. The Cuban government has yet to comment publicly on the cause or timeline for full restoration.
Amid the crisis, US President Donald Trump issued statements suggesting that Cuba could either be “liberated” or brought under US control, claiming the country has become a “weak nation.”
These remarks, made at the White House, have heightened international attention on the already fragile situation.
Arab media outlets reported that Cuba’s state-run electricity company confirmed the national grid shutdown.
Analysts point out that the island has not received significant oil shipments since January 9, and US threats have reportedly discouraged other countries from supplying energy to Cuba.
The nation currently faces severe energy shortages alongside economic challenges and growing political pressure.
Social media speculation about potential US military involvement has surged following the blackout, although Cuban and US officials have not confirmed any military action.
Cuba produces roughly 40 percent of its domestic oil needs, but this is insufficient to meet total national demand, contributing to ongoing power and fuel shortages.
