Islamabad (Web Desk): The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted an active monsoon spell across various parts of the country from July 18 to 25, cautioning that widespread downpours could bring flash floods, landslides and urban flooding in several vulnerable regions.
According to the weather advisory issued by the Met Office, moisture-laden monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea are steadily moving into the upper and central parts of Pakistan and are expected to intensify over the weekend. In addition, a western weather system is likely to reach the country's northern areas on Monday, further strengthening rainfall activity.

The PMD said Azad Jammu and Kashmir is expected to experience rain, gusty winds and thunderstorms from the evening of July 18 until July 25, with occasional breaks in between. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated locations, including Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber and Mirpur.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, widespread rain accompanied by windstorms and thunderstorms is forecast from the evening of July 19 through July 23. Heavy rainfall is expected in Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Nowshera, Charsadda, Karak, Tank, Lakki Marwat, Swabi, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Kohat, Kurram, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, North and South Waziristan, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar, Mardan and Hangu.
The Met Office also forecast widespread rain, thunderstorms and strong winds across Islamabad and several districts of Punjab from the evening of July 19 to July 23. The areas expected to receive heavy to very heavy showers include Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Faisalabad, Khushab, Sargodha, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal, Sahiwal, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Nankana Sahib, Chiniot and Okara.
Meanwhile, rainfall is likely to extend to southern and western Punjab between July 20 and 24, affecting Noorpur Thal, Bhakkar, Mianwali, Layyah, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Khanewal, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh, Kot Addu, Rahim Yar Khan and Rajanpur.
Gilgit-Baltistan is also expected to witness moderate to heavy rain along with thunderstorms and gusty winds from the evening of July 18 to July 25. The forecast covers Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche and Shigar.
In Balochistan, rain and thunderstorms with isolated heavy downpours are expected from the evening of July 19 to July 23 in Zhob, Sherani, Loralai, Kohlu, Sibi, Naseerabad, Jhal Magsi, Jaffarabad, Barkhan, Dera Bugti and Khuzdar.
Most parts of Sindh are expected to remain hot and humid throughout the period. However, isolated rain and thunderstorms are likely in Tharparkar, Mithi, Sukkur, Larkana, Shikarpur, Dadu and Jacobabad from the evening of July 20 to July 24.
The PMD warned that strong winds and lightning strikes could damage weak structures, including solar panels, electricity poles and roadside billboards. It also cautioned that landslides may occur in mountainous areas of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galliyat and Kashmir between July 20 and 25.
The department further warned that the wet spell could trigger flash flooding in local streams and hill torrents across Kashmir, Murree, Galliyat, northeastern Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, the hill torrent regions of Dera Ghazi Khan and northeastern Balochistan.
It added that intense rainfall may result in urban flooding in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Multan and Faisalabad from July 20 to 23.
The weather department advised tourists and travellers to avoid unnecessary travel during the forecast period, while urging farmers to plan agricultural activities in line with the changing weather and ensure the safety and proper care of their livestock.
The PMD said the ongoing hot and humid conditions are expected to ease as the monsoon spell progresses and urged all relevant authorities to stay on alert and implement precautionary measures to minimise the risk of any untoward incidents.
