Islamabad (Web Desk): The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning concerning the likelihood of urban flooding and an increase in water levels in seasonal streams and rivers across several parts of Pakistan, owing to anticipated heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours.
The public has been urged to remain alert and stay updated by following verified sources, including the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert App.
A spokesperson from the NDMA stated that the organization, in coordination with relevant institutions, is actively implementing preventive strategies to address any emergencies that may arise.
The public has been strongly advised to take all necessary precautions in view of the weather forecast. People have been cautioned against attempting to cross flooded areas, such as nullahs, submerged roads, and bridges. Additionally, residents in low-lying zones are encouraged to secure their belongings and move livestock to elevated locations.
Those living in areas vulnerable to flooding have been advised to prepare emergency supplies, including food, clean drinking water, and essential medications sufficient for three to five days.
Meanwhile, local authorities have been directed to ensure the availability and readiness of drainage equipment to manage excess water. Residents are reminded to keep themselves informed through reliable updates broadcasted on television and accessible via mobile platforms.
According to the advisory, Rawalpindi and Islamabad are expected to receive periods of intense rainfall within the next 24 to 48 hours.
The NDMA warned that the persistent downpour could trigger a significant rise in water levels in Nullah Leh, which could pose a serious flooding threat to adjacent low-lying areas.
Citizens, particularly those living close to Nullah Leh, have been asked to remain alert, follow safety protocols, and evacuate to safer areas if emergency sirens are activated. Public cooperation with emergency services is emphasized as critical during any potential response efforts.
The forecast also indicates a strong chance of heavy rainfall accompanied by windstorms and thunderstorms within the next 12 hours across various districts in Punjab. These include Lahore, Chakwal, Attock, Jhelum, Khushab, Sargodha, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Narowal, Okara, Kasur, Sheikhupura, and Hafizabad.
The NDMA has instructed all concerned departments to take advance measures to ensure a swift and effective response should the situation escalate.
