Lahore (Web Desk): Dr. Muhammad Ahmad, Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Education, Lahore, is making remarkable progress in the fields of membrane technology and industrial chemistry. He is leading a groundbreaking research project that aims to produce pharmaceutical-grade sodium chloride (common salt) using locally available rock salt sources in Pakistan.

This innovative project is especially focused on enhancing the purity and quality of sodium chloride to meet the stringent standards required for medical applications, such as kidney dialysis, where only the highest quality salts can be used safely.

Recognizing the potential and importance of this research, the Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) has recently selected Dr. Ahmad’s project for further evaluation and support. PSF is a prestigious national organization that works under the Ministry of Science and Technology and is dedicated to promoting scientific research and innovation in Pakistan. Each year, the foundation receives thousands of proposals from across the country. In the latest round, out of over 1,800 submitted research projects, only 80 were shortlisted, and Dr. Ahmad’s project was among the few chosen for its scientific merit and potential impact.

The core idea behind Dr. Ahmad's project is to develop a cost-effective and sustainable method to produce high-purity sodium chloride locally, reducing dependence on imported pharmaceutical-grade salts and lowering the production costs for medical industries. This approach not only supports self-reliance in essential medical materials but also promotes the value-added utilization of Pakistan’s natural resources, such as rock salt from the Punjab region.

If successful, his method could significantly contribute to the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors by ensuring the availability of affordable, high-quality salt for treatments that are critical to patients, such as those undergoing dialysis. It would also open up opportunities for commercial-scale production and possible export in the long term.
