New York (Web Desk): Pakistan has condemned Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and called for urgent de-escalation and UN-led political process in Yemen.
Addressing an emergency session of the UN Security Council on Yemen, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, reiterated Islamabad’s firm commitment to Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, security and prosperity.
“Pakistan condemns, in the strongest terms, all Houthi attacks against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” Ambassador Asim said, reaffirming Pakistan’s “unwavering support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, security, and prosperity of Saudi Arabia”.
Speaking during the late Tuesday night session of the UN Security Council (UNSC), Ahmad said Pakistan recognised Saudi Arabia’s “legitimate right”, under the UN Charter and international law, to adopt necessary measures to defend its territory, safeguard its citizens and protect national assets from threats.
He also raised concerns over the spread of Houthi attacks around the Bab al-Mandab Strait, describing the developments in the strategically important maritime route as “a serious escalation”.
The Pakistani envoy cautioned that persistent breaches of international law involving commercial vessels were creating an increasing risk to freedom of navigation and the uninterrupted movement of international maritime trade.
“Any attempt to threaten, obstruct, or weaponise the vital waterways will have consequences for international trade and commercial shipping, global supply chains, and energy security,” he said.
The Pakistani envoy pointed out that the Security Council had been compelled to meet again within less than a week, highlighting “the urgency and gravity of the rapidly deteriorating situation in Yemen”.

He said the relative stability that had been “painstakingly maintained” in Yemen since 2022 had now come to an end.
“Continued escalation risks reigniting a full-scale conflict and drawing Yemen deeper into the wider regional confrontation. This must be prevented,” he said.
He further warned about the increasingly severe humanitarian crisis in Yemen, stressing that diplomatic initiatives must reflect the seriousness of the situation.
Pakistan expressed its support for “the resumption of an inclusive, Yemeni-led and Yemeni-owned political process under United Nations auspices”, the ambassador said.
“Pakistan will continue to support all sincere efforts towards de-escalation, dialogue, and a comprehensive political settlement that can bring lasting peace and stability to Yemen and the wider region,” he said.
