PM Shehbaz stresses enhanced connectivity projects for stronger SCO, prosperous region

Islamabad (Web Desk): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday urged member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to work together for a well-connected, integrated and prosperous region.

Delivering the national statement at the 23rd meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Heads of Government (CHG) held in Islamabad, the premier emphasized the need for enhanced collaboration among member states to create a well-connected and prosperous region.

He highlighted the importance of establishing a comprehensive connectivity framework within the SCO that not only boosts regional trade but also supports the broader vision of a connected Euro-Asia.

Projects such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the International North-South Transport Corridor were identified as critical projects to expand, focusing on the development of vital road, rail, and digital infrastructure.

PM Shehbaz also addressed the pressing issue of poverty in the region, calling for a collective effort to uplift the quality of life for all people.

He underscored the necessity of urgent humanitarian assistance for Afghanistan and urged its interim government to take steps to prevent the use of its territory for terrorism against neighboring nations.

PM Shehbaz recognized climate change as an existential threat, particularly affecting Pakistan, which faces numerous climate-induced disasters.

He advocated for prioritizing environmental cooperation within the SCO and welcomed recent agreements focused on environmental protection. He proposed that member states collaborate on simulation exercises to enhance disaster preparedness in the face of climate challenges.

Speaking about financial issues, PM Shehbaz pointed out the need for reforming the global financial architecture to foster development.

He expressed support for the establishment of an SCO alternative development funding mechanism that could provide vital resources for reviving stalled projects. Additionally, he encouraged member states to create a favourable environment for business and investment, promoting economic growth within the region.

PM Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening people-to-people ties and facilitating cultural exchanges among SCO members, viewing these efforts as essential for fostering understanding and harmony.

Earlier in his opening remarks, PM Shehbaz underscored the significance of this meeting as a demonstration of the strong ties and collaboration among member nations.

He highlighted the SCO's potential to foster socio-economic development, promote regional stability, and enhance the overall quality of life for its citizens.
