Shanghai (Web Desk): Pakistan has formally signed the agreement establishing the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO), becoming one of the founding members of the new international body aimed at promoting global collaboration in the field of artificial intelligence.
The agreement was signed during a formal ceremony held in Shanghai, China, where Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar represented Pakistan and signed the document on behalf of the government.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), Pakistan's participation as a founding member of WAICO reflects its commitment to advancing international cooperation in artificial intelligence and contributing to the responsible development and governance of emerging technologies.
The Foreign Office said Pakistan remains committed to promoting collaboration in AI, particularly from the perspective of the Global South, with the objective of ensuring that developing countries benefit from technological progress and are actively included in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
The ministry added that Pakistan looks forward to working closely with other WAICO member states to narrow the global AI divide, encourage knowledge sharing, strengthen technical cooperation, and promote fair and inclusive access to artificial intelligence technologies.
Officials said the organization is expected to provide a platform for member countries to collaborate on AI research, innovation, policy development, capacity building, and the ethical use of artificial intelligence.
Pakistan believes such cooperation will help harness AI for sustainable economic growth, digital transformation, and social development.
Pakistan's signing of the agreement underscores its growing focus on emerging technologies and reflects the country's intention to play a more active role in international efforts aimed at ensuring that the benefits of artificial intelligence are shared equitably among developed and developing nations alike.
