Islamabad (Web Desk): The United Kingdom (UK) has officially lifted its four-year-long ban on Pakistani airlines, a major step forward in aviation relations between the two countries.
This decision comes after sustained technical cooperation and reform efforts by Pakistan's aviation authorities, which have now satisfied international air safety requirements, according to the UK’s independent Air Safety Committee.
Welcoming the UK Air Safety Board’s decision to lift the ban on Pakistani flights, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described it as a constructive step that would bolster Pakistan’s global standing and deepen bilateral relations with the United Kingdom.
In a statement, he noted that the flight ban had originally stemmed from irresponsible and damaging remarks made by leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which adversely affected the country's international credibility.
PM Shehbaz expressed satisfaction over the restoration of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) operations to the UK, highlighting it as a significant achievement—particularly for the large Pakistani community residing in Britain.
The prime minister extended his appreciation to Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, the Ministry of Defence, and the Aviation Division for their concerted efforts in securing the lifting of the restriction.
He further stated that the government is implementing swift and strategic measures to elevate the competitiveness of Pakistani airlines in line with global aviation standards.
PM Shehbaz reaffirmed his government’s commitment to introducing greater transparency and quality across the aviation sector, ensuring strict adherence to international compliance frameworks.
Meanwhile, British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Jane Marriott, also expressed appreciation for the joint work carried out by aviation specialists from both sides.
She acknowledged the significant progress made and shared her personal hope to fly with a Pakistani airline when visiting friends and family in the future.
With Pakistan no longer on the UK’s Air Safety List, its airlines are once again eligible to apply for operating licenses from the UK Civil Aviation Authority. This marks the initial phase in what could soon see the restoration of direct flights between the two nations.
Pakistan had originally been added to the UK’s Air Safety List in 2021 due to concerns over aviation standards. Since then, consistent dialogue and collaboration between the UK and Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority have led to comprehensive improvements in flight safety procedures.
This development is expected to positively impact the sizeable community of British citizens with Pakistani roots—over 1.6 million people—as well as the many UK nationals residing in Pakistan.
Furthermore, the lifting of the ban could serve as a boost to the two countries' economic ties, particularly their £4.7 billion annual trade relationship.
With air travel now poised to resume, the reopening of skies signals a new chapter in strengthening cultural, familial, and commercial connections between Pakistan and the UK.
