Lahore (Staff Report): Amjad Javed Saleemi on Monday assumed the charge of his office as Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab.

On October 9, the Establishment Division issued a notice to appoint Amjad Saleemi as new Punjab Inspector General but the Election Commission of Pakistan suspended his appointment.

The ECP had barred the government from making such postings and transfers in the wake of by-election. In a letter to the Secretary Establishment, the ECP directed the government to halt transfer of the Punjab police chief.

Amjad Javed Saleem joined police department as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) on November 1, 1986. He served as DPO Gujranwala and Mianwali and also performed his duties in Bosnia under United Nations’ peace mission after selection in the 14th Common division.

Saleemi also served as DPO Sahiwal and Sialkot and DIG investigation and CCPO Quetta. His retirement is due on January 31, 2020.

Amjad Javed Saleem is replacing Tahir Khan who was appointed by the government and could serve at the position for merely five months.

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry had said that Tahir Khan was removed as Punjab's police chief for not obeying orders of the government.
