Islamabad (Web Desk): The International Day of Families is being observed today (Friday) around the world, including in Pakistan.
This year’s theme is “Families, Inequalities and Child Wellbeing”, focusing on the importance of stronger investment in integrated, family-centred policies that can help reduce social gaps and support healthier growth and development for children.
The United Nations (UN) notes that this day is observed every year on May 15. It was officially declared by the UN General Assembly in 1993 through resolution A/RES/47/237, highlighting the global community’s recognition of the essential role families play in society.
The observance provides an opportunity to raise awareness about family-related challenges and to better understand the social, economic and demographic changes that continue to affect family structures worldwide.
Families remain a cornerstone of social and economic development, yet many continue to experience financial insecurity, limited support for caregiving, and unequal access to essential public services.
In the absence of adequate protection and assistance, households with young children are particularly exposed to poverty, which can leave lasting impacts on children’s health, education, and overall quality of life.
Ongoing issues such as unstable incomes, insufficient caregiving resources, and barriers to basic services can significantly restrict a child’s development. These challenges become even more severe when combined with inequalities linked to gender, ethnicity, migration status, or disability.
With global disparities continuing to widen, this year’s observance places special emphasis on inequalities in income, education, healthcare, digital access, and other essential services that shape children’s life opportunities.
It highlights the urgency of strengthening integrated social protection systems, including child support benefits, parental leave policies, affordable childcare services, and early childhood education, in order to build stronger family resilience, reduce poverty, and ensure equal opportunities.
As per the UN, the day will also serve as a platform for dialogue among member states, relevant UN bodies, and civil society organizations, while also showcasing effective policy approaches.
Meanwhile, a new research paper will be launched examining trends in inequality and exploring policy solutions within the context of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
