Veteran playwright, actor Shoaib Hashmi passes away

Lahore (Web Desk): Renowned playwright, actor and columnist Shoaib Hashmi passed away in Lahore on Monday following a prolonged illness. He was 84.

"A man of letters, words, humour, wit and prose - the legend Shoaib Hashmi has passed away," Pakistan Television (PTV) announced in a tweet.

Hashmi is survived by his wife, artist and curator Salima Hashmi, daughter of renowned poet, Faiz Ahmed Faiz. They also have a daughter, actor and director Mira Hashmi, and son Yasser Hashmi.

Widely considered as one of the pioneers of national television, Shoaib Hashmi was responsible for some of PTV’s most popular programmes and dramas.

The theatre legend had written multiple shows for the state broadcaster such as ‘Akkar Bakkar’, ‘Sach Gupp’ and ‘Taal Matol’ in the seventies, and was a columnist for The News and Gulf News.

He received a Master of Arts degree in economics from Government College (now Government College University), Lahore and a MSc. degree from the London School of Economics (LSE). He was also an economics professor in Lahore.

Hashmi also studied theatre at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, London and was a recipient of a Tamgha-i-Imtiaz as well as the President’s Award for Pride of Performance.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed deep grief and sorrow over the sudden death of renowned drama writer, intellectual, poet and son in law of Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Shoaib Hashmi.

In his condolence message, the premier expressed sympathy with Muneeza Hashmi, Saleema Hashmi, and other family members over the death of Shoaib Hashmi.

Paying glowing tribute to the deceased, PM Shehbaz said that Shoaib Hashmi played a significant role in the golden era of Pakistan Television.

He said Shoaib Hashmi introduced a new angle of comedy programmes and also taught the society a respect and values.

PM Shehbaz said Shoaib Hashmi also wrote unforgettable and outstanding dramas.

He also prayed for high ranks to the departed soul and fortitude to the bereaved family.

Moreover, Minister of Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb also expressed sorrow over Hashmi's death.

In a condolence message, the minister paid tribute to Hashmi saying that his services for the showbiz industry, including the teaching profession will always be remembered.
