Islamabad (Web Desk): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday declared the US-Iran peace accord a landmark achievement for international stability, announcing that the formal signing ceremony of the agreement will be held in Geneva on June 19.
He described the development as a major breakthrough for peace and diplomacy on the global stage.
Addressing the National Assembly session hours after he and US President Donald Trump confirmed that Washington and Tehran had reached an agreement, PM Shehbaz said that the world was witnessing a defining chapter in modern history.
“Today the world has witnessed that the pursuit of peace has achieved a great victory and the flames of war have begun to subside. This is a historic moment that historians will record in golden letters,” he said.
Referring to the difficult months that preceded the agreement, PM Shehbaz called the occasion a blessing after an extended period of challenges and uncertainty. “Following the dark night of war, the sun of peace has finally risen,” he remarked.
The premier informed lawmakers that both Iran and the United States had agreed to immediately and permanently cease military actions on all fronts, including Lebanon.
Emphasising the broader significance of the accord, he stated, “This is not just an agreement between two nations, but a victory for peace, dialogue, and diplomacy over the devastation of war.” He added that the recognition and prestige Pakistan had earned through its role in the process was a rare honour that countries often spend generations striving to achieve.
PM Shehbaz thanked Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Chinese President Xi Jinping, US President Donald Trump, Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, and Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian, as well as negotiating teams from both sides, for displaying wisdom, patience, and sound judgment during a highly sensitive period.
He also extended congratulations to the people of Pakistan and acknowledged the support of President Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, and leaders of other political parties for their guidance throughout the process.
PM Shehbaz particularly praised the extraordinary role played by Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, who devoted day and night to bring an end to the war and securing peace.
He noted that negotiations had reached several critical stages where the possibility of failure appeared real, but the field marshal’s determination and commitment ultimately helped steer the efforts toward success.
PM Shehbaz also commended Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, officials of the Foreign Ministry, and various state institutions for their relentless contributions.
Calling the occasion a moment of gratitude, he urged the nation to offer prayers to Allah Almighty for granting Pakistan unprecedented respect and distinction.
PM Shehbaz further noted that the conflict had imposed significant economic challenges on Pakistan, placing considerable pressure on the national economy. Despite those difficulties, he said the country demonstrated remarkable resilience and unity.
The premier praised both federal and provincial governments, particularly the chief ministers, for their effective leadership and cooperation during the challenging period.
PM Shehbaz assured citizens that the economic benefits expected from enhanced global stability after the peace accord would eventually be felt across Pakistan. He pledged that the government would continue working until every Pakistani benefited from the positive outcomes of the agreement.
