California (Web Desk): YouTube has rolled out several new features that will allow parents to have more control over the type of content their children and teenagers can view based on age-appropriate guidelines.
The first major feature is Screen Time Limits, which will be available for accounts of younger users. With this feature, parents will be able to set a specific time limit for watching Shorts.
Parents can allocate up to 60 minutes for their children to scroll through Shorts, after which the feature will stop them from watching further.
In the near future, parents will also have the option to set this time limit to zero, effectively preventing their children from viewing Shorts entirely.
Additionally, parents will be able to use bedtime reminders or break alerts to help ensure children spend less time on their screens, promoting better sleep and overall health.
YouTube has stated that this is the first feature of its kind in the industry, offering parents comprehensive control over the consumption of short-form video content.
Another new feature is Easy Account Switching. Many households share mobile devices or tablets, and this update will make switching between different accounts much easier. In the coming weeks, YouTube will introduce a new sign-up tool that will allow parents to quickly create accounts for their children and switch between them with just a few clicks.
YouTube has also revealed that it is introducing new guidelines for creators to ensure that videos made for young audiences are not only engaging but also age-appropriate and of high quality.
These guidelines have been developed in collaboration with global experts, including the American Psychological Association and the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children's Hospital.
The goal of these guidelines is to prioritize educational and inspirational content so that young viewers can maintain a healthy balance between entertainment and learning.
