Begum Kulsoom Nawaz laid to rest in Lahore

Lahore (Staff Report): Former first lady Begum Kulsoom Nawaz was laid to rest in Lahore’s Jati Umra on Friday.

Earlier, her funeral prayer, led by Maulana Tariq Jameel was offered at Sharif Medical City.

The funeral was attended by the leadership of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf including Punjab Governor Chaudhry Sarwar and NA Speaker Asad Qaiser. Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders Khursheed Shah, Qamar Zaman Kaira were also in attendance. MQM-P leader and federal minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, MQM-P leader Farooq Sattar and PkMAP chief Mehmood Khan Azhakzai, Punjab Assembly speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and PML-Q leader Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain were also present.

Quran Khawni will be held on Sunday between Asar and Maghrib prayers.

Pakistan International Airlines' (PIA) flight PK-758, carrying Begum Kulsoom’s body from London landed at Allama Iqbal International Airport around 6:45am on Friday.

The body was transferred to an ambulance directly from the airplane and taken to Sharif Medical City.

Shehbaz Sharif, the deceased's brother-in-law and president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), along with Begum Kulsoom's daughter Asma, grandson Zayd Hussain Sharif (Hussain Nawaz's son), and 11 other family members accompanied the body.

Nawaz, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Captain (retd) Mohammad Safdar who have been released on parole were also taken to Sharif Medical City to pay their respects.

Earlier on Wednesday, PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif also arrived in London to bring back the dead body of Kulsoom Nawaz for burial in Pakistan.

Meanwhile, funeral prayer of Begum Kulsoom was offered at Central Mosque near Regent Park in London on Thursday. Her funeral prayers were attended by sons Hassan and Hussain, brother-in-law Shehbaz Sharif , Chaudhry Nisar, Ishaq Dar among others.

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz passed away in London on Tuesday after a months-long battle with cancer. She had been placed on life support earlier as her health began deteriorating.

Kulsoom travelled to the British capital city in August last year, where she was diagnosed with Lymphoma, prompting Sharif family members to get her admitted to the upscale health facility.

The former first lady, who contested elections from NA-120 Lahore last year, was shifted to the intensive care unit at a UK hospital from the emergency unit after her condition deteriorated ahead of Eid ul Fitr.

She is survived by her husband and four children, Hassan, Hussain, Maryam and Asma.
