Pakistan appreciates Qatar's LNG support, calls for stronger energy cooperation

Islamabad (Web Desk): Pakistan and Qatar have agreed to further deepen their cooperation in the energy sector, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to ensuring uninterrupted LNG supplies to Pakistan during a period of rising demand and regional logistical challenges.

According to an official statement, Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik held a meeting with Qatar’s Ambassador to Pakistan Ali bin Mubarak Al-Khater on Thursday, where discussions focused on strengthening bilateral energy coordination and securing stable liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments for Pakistan.

The minister conveyed Pakistan’s appreciation to the State of Qatar for its timely facilitation of LNG cargoes, particularly at a time when Pakistan was facing supply chain pressures due to congestion in the Strait of Hormuz alongside heightened electricity demand during the summer season.

He emphasized that Qatar’s assistance had played a crucial role in helping Pakistan manage its energy needs during a challenging period.

Ali Pervaiz Malik described Qatar’s continued support as a clear demonstration of the strong and brotherly relations between the two countries. He also noted that he had been in regular contact with Qatar’s Minister for Energy, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, regarding LNG shipments, adding that close coordination between the two sides had already resulted in the successful arrival of two LNG cargoes in Pakistan.

The petroleum minister further stated that Pakistan remained committed to working closely with Qatar to ensure a consistent and reliable supply of LNG in the future.

He added that Islamabad preferred to secure energy resources from friendly nations through mutual cooperation and proper regulatory approvals, while prioritizing safety and minimizing risks to people and infrastructure.

The minister also informed that additional arrangements were being explored to meet the country’s growing gas requirements in line with national energy demand.

On his part, Ambassador Ali bin Mubarak Al-Khater reiterated Qatar’s continued support for Pakistan, stating that Doha had directed him to extend full facilitation in addressing Pakistan’s energy needs.

 He said this assistance reflected the deep-rooted and friendly ties between the leadership of both countries and also acknowledged Pakistan’s constructive diplomatic role in promoting peace and stability in the region.

Ali Pervaiz Malik remarked that ongoing regional tensions underline the importance of stronger preparedness and resilience in the energy sector.

The petroleum minister added that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the government was developing a comprehensive energy security strategy aimed at safeguarding Pakistan’s energy system from external shocks and disruptions.
