Pakistan desires to strengthen cooperative partnership with EU: PM Shehbaz

Islamabad (Web Desk): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reiterated Pakistan's strong desire to further deepen its cooperative ties with the European Union (EU), with a particular focus on continuing the Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP Plus).

He made this statement during a meeting with EU Ambassador Dr Riina Kionka, who visited him for a courtesy call in Islamabad on Friday.

PM Shehbaz said that the GSP Plus arrangement has been mutually beneficial since its inception, contributing to the growth of trade and economic relations between the two sides.

Emphasizing the longstanding cordial relations between Pakistan and the EU, the prime minister conveyed his satisfaction with the positive direction of these ties.

He also welcomed the announcement of the first-ever Pakistan-EU High-Level Business Forum, which will be held in Islamabad this May, and assured Ambassador Kionka of Pakistan’s full cooperation and support to ensure the success of the event.

PM Shehbaz thanked the EU Ambassador for extending condolences following the tragic terrorist attack on the Jaffar Express train in Balochistan.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to eradicating terrorism and ensuring security throughout the country.

Furthermore, PM Shehbaz and Ambassador Kionka discussed various aspects of bilateral relationship, including human rights matters.

Ambassador Kionka also briefed the premier on the recent visits of EU delegations to Pakistan and outlined the forthcoming opportunities for engagement between the two entities.

Separately, during a meeting with EU Ambasador Dr Riina Kionka, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb reiterated government’s commitment to supporting European businesses operating in the country, emphasizing the importance of facilitating their activities and ensuring the smooth transfer of profits and dividends. 

He acknowledged the significant role that EU support, particularly through the GSP Plus scheme, has played in Pakistan's export-driven economic growth.

The finance minister stressed that the trade preference arrangement has been crucial for the country's development efforts.

The two sides expressed a shared desire to further enhance their economic and trade relations, aiming to foster a business environment that benefits both Pakistan and the EU.

Dr Kionka, in her remarks, highlighted that European companies are increasingly recognizing Pakistan as a promising destination for business investments and opportunities.
