California (Web Desk): Instagram has introduced a redesigned version of its wordmark, marking the platform’s first major change to the written form of its logo in nearly a decade.

Adam Mosseri, head of the Meta-owned photo and video-sharing platform, announced the change in a social media post.

He described the new wordmark as a more modern and refined version while saying it retains the simplicity associated with Instagram’s original identity.

Mosseri said the written logo was being refreshed after more than 10 years, noting that the previous design had begun to look dated after being used for such a long period.

The updated wordmark features a new typeface, with noticeable adjustments to the shape and appearance of several letters in the word “Instagram”. The revised lettering gives the brand name a cleaner and more contemporary appearance.

The latest change is focused on the written wordmark, while Instagram’s familiar multicoloured camera icon remains unchanged for now. The app’s recognisable icon therefore continues to feature its established colourful design.

Instagram last made a major change to its logo in 2016, when it moved away from the classic brown camera design and introduced a colourful gradient-based icon. That design subsequently became one of the platform’s most recognisable visual elements.

The new wordmark has prompted mixed reactions online. While some users have welcomed the refreshed and modern appearance, others have described the new lettering as unfamiliar and questioned certain changes in the shape of the characters.

Instagram has not announced any major alteration to its main camera icon as part of the latest update. The company appears to be focusing primarily on refreshing its written brand identity while retaining the visual elements that users have long associated with the platform.

Meta has so far not issued a detailed official statement explaining the wider strategy behind the wordmark redesign.
