Washington (Web Desk): US President Donald Trump has stated that he is prepared to impose major sanctions on Russia, provided that NATO member states agree to stop purchasing fuel from the country.
In his remarks, President Trump urged NATO allies to take firm steps against Russia by halting energy imports, saying that such unified action would pave the way for stronger and more effective sanctions.
He also proposed conditional tariffs of 50% to 100% on China, arguing that this move could pressure Beijing to help bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine war. Trump explained that these tariffs would be lifted once the conflict concludes, as China maintains significant influence over Russia, and the tariffs would weaken that grip.
Trump further commented that the Ukraine war was initiated by President Biden and Ukrainian President Zelensky, not by the U.S. He said his focus is on stopping the war and saving both Ukrainian and Russian lives.
He warned that if NATO follows his recommendations, the war could end quickly. Otherwise, he claimed, continuing the current path would only waste time and American taxpayer money.
Meanwhile, the United States has urged the G7 and European Union to impose tariffs on countries—particularly India and China—that continue to buy Russian oil.
During a meeting of G7 finance ministers, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Besent stated that a unified strategy is necessary to weaken Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war machine, and called for coordinated tariffs on Russian oil buyers.
The meeting also agreed to accelerate discussions on using frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine’s defense.
