Veteran musician Ustad Bundu Khan remembered on death anniversary 

Karachi (Web Desk): The 71st death anniversary of veteran Pakistani musician and sarangi player Ustad Bundu Khan is being observed today (Tuesday), remembering his invaluable contribution to classical music.

He was born in 1880 in Delhi into a household known for its musical heritage, and his journey with the sarangi began at the tender age of eight. From those early years, his natural talent and dedication quickly set him on a path toward greatnes.

In 1935, when All India Radio launched its services, Ustad Bundu Khan was among the first artists to perform on air, introducing audiences across the region to his distinctive style. Throughout his career, he developed mastery over more than 500 ragas, an achievement few musicians have matched.

Apart from his performances, Bundu Khan also earned respect as a music scholar. He wrote a detailed book on musical theory, which was released in both Urdu and Hindi, highlighting his role in preserving classical traditions for future generations.

After the partition, he moved to Karachi and joined Radio Pakistan, where his sarangi continued to resonate through broadcasts nationwide. He remained actively associated with radio stations across the country until his death on January 13, 1955.

Decades later, in recognition of his lifelong services to music, the Government of Pakistan awarded him the Pride of Performance in 1985, honoring his legacy posthumously.
